I wanted to get a stand alone, hard copy version of the early days of modern development in Essen, something that I could put on my shelf and refer to as needed. I had not read the tales in some years and enjoyed getting to re-new my acquaintance with the characters. Author Kim Mackey brings a wealth of scholarship to the task. She also introduces characters that we will encounter later in other works in the 1632 universe. I paid for the hard copy and I am quite happy with the book. .....Only Flint is Flint, no mistake about that but these stories are enjoyable on their own.Product details

Essen Steel Ring of Fire Press Fiction Book 3 eBook Kim Mackey Reviews
It was nice to read to flesh out some of the industrial development aspects of the Ring of Fire. Pleasant, but you won't be knocked out of your socks.
I have long been a fan of the alternative history Ring of Fire series, published by Baen, that began with Eric Flint's "1632." Recently some worthy books could not fit into Baen's overall publishing schedules and are being published by the new Ring of Fire Press Fiction. This book describes the complexity of introducing and building a steel industry in the 1600's in a well told story.
I enjoyed this novelette very much, as it was very focused on some of the technical requirements of the Grantvillers in the 1632 Universe. The author writes with a lot of warmth in developing a lovely romantic sidebar to the tale between a brilliant downtimer and a
very bright uptime chess playing entrepreneur. The thrust of the storyline involves developing downtimer capability in the manufacture of modern steels. Very well done! A Five Star effort!
Here is a story about everyday people trying to make a new live in a world different that the one they were born in. A 20th Century young American finding his way in the 17th Century Germany - a wonderful story about everyday people making a living and loving. If you are expecting something swash-buckling this is not a book for you - this is a book that affirms everyday 20th Century people could make it in this new world - a great rainy afternoon read
I loved this book. My favorite books in the "Ring of Fire" are the books by Gorg Huff and Paula Goodlett, which describe business and technical aspects of the 17th century. This book contains details about mathematics, the making of steel and electric motors, and industry and politics. It also has a nice love story. Good story, interesting, likable characters.
Another republishing of a series of articles from the Grantville Gazette. This is from the very early years of the 1632 universe (in fact it begins on the day that Grantville appears in 1632). It traces the beginning of Essen Steel and some of the early spread of mathematics (from the future) into the 1632 universe. These seemingly disconnected topics are united by some common characters.
This essentially is a "back story" for some of the events in the main 1632 series, where Essen Steel and related developments (steam engines and early anti-biotics) are part of the main story line. The book is a little short. It could have been helped by including a couple more related stories, especially about the development of steam engines. Although reasonably well written, it may be boring to those who are not interested in background details.
This is a perfectly nice little (very short) novel. Enjoyed the book, but…..reason for the 3 is that the character development although good, falls far short of what I have become used to in the ring of fire series. This is in essence a very pleasant, Long - Short story. Would have liked a little more technical detail about what and how steel would be produced using the stories scenario and more development of the characters.
As a general statement concerning the series as a whole, I would like to see in all of the Ring of Fire series some consideration given to differing standards of beauty. The downtime female protagonist is "beautiful", but in reality how would a typical uptime man view a woman with very hairy legs and other body parts. Obviously standards of beauty change with both exposure and experience but I've always been bothered by the "love at first site scenarios" in the Ring series, especially in the 1632 and 1633 time frame before experience has reeducated our standards of beauty. The dress of the day would obscure or conceal some of these beauty differences but still…….
